Traditionally, Bilaspur was a aspect of Kalchuri empire of Ratanpur. The city, however, came into popularity around 1741, the season of the Maratha Empire concept, when a Maratha formal took up his residence there. He control of Bilaspur area was taken over by the English Govt in 1818. The city was taken over by the English Eastern Indian Organization of Excellent England in the season 1854 from the then leader of the area, Bhosale of Nagpur empire that belong to Maratha Empire.

Bilaspur area was constituted in 1861, followed by Bilaspur town in 1867. Famines in the Bilaspur area were documented by the English control in 1828-9, 1834-5, 1845-6, 1868-9 and 1899–1900. In 1868-9 and 1899–1900, the down pours unsuccessful almost absolutely, leading to serious problems, migration and desertion of towns. After the 1868-9 starvation there was success for the next 25 years; but in 1895 there was a very inadequate collect, followed in 1896 by a finish failing of plants, and serious starvation ongoing throughout 1897. In that season the death amount rate was as great as one in six individuals. The starvation of 1897 was followed by two positive years; but in 1899 the monsoon unsuccessful absolutely and the grain plants was completely damaged.
