People

It is not possible to give detailed description of the people, their way of life, culture, dialects, dresses and other aspects of their living in such a small space. But some books on the subjects have already been written and are available in the market. Our aim is only to provide some basic information about them so that while trekking through those areas or villages, the interested tourists or trekkers could stop and make more detailed study about them. People in this state belong to different races and tribes who have migrated from other places. Some areas are inhabited by Aryans whereas others are of Mongol race. It is very easy to recognise them from their features. The inhabitants of Barabhangal village (Kangra) claim themselves to be the descendants of Alexander whereas the villagers of Malana village (Kullu) have their own way of living administration and are independent in many respects. About half of the area of Himachal is inhabited by the nomadics and tribals. The most interesting thing about the people of this state is that they have kept alive thier age old traditions, customs and cultural values till this date. They are very fond of music, dance, fair and festivals. Each community participates in the religious and social functions of the other community without any discrimination although they follow different religions. Due to cold climate, the design and architecture of the houses is almost the same throughout the upper belt of the state. The warmer regions have an influence of Punjab. The ground floor is meant for animals, first storey for living with a verandah on all sides for sun basking during the long months of winter. The top is covered with locally extracted slates. Now with the change in economy of the people due to cash crops of fruits and potatoes, the style of living and houses is fast changing to cement and concrete. This change is also due to the ban on cutting of trees. The whole area of Lahaul - Spiti and Kinnaur bordering Ladakh and Tibet is tribal of Mongol race and follow Buddhism. To keep the family small and united due to small land available, polyandry system of family was in use but not this system is dying slowly as most of the families have migrated to other places and some have gained high position to support a separate family. Bharmaur (Chamba) is known to be the seat of another tribe called Gaddis (Shephards). They have large number of sheep and goats with which they keep moving to higher places in the mountains in summer and coe down with their flocks in winter to the warmer places. Such shephards are also living in Bara Bhangal. This tribe is very fond of music and dance. There is hardly any fair or festival where they do not make merry with dance and music duly drunk with local brew, which is very favourite drink with them. In Kullu district there is a very unique village known as Malana. The village is divided into two units for administration purpose because it has its own way of organisation of everything in the villages. It is also known as the oldest democracy of the world. They have their own dialect, a mixture of Kullu and Lahaul words. To rule the two villages, they have elected to Sabhas (Lower and upper house) through which everything is regulated. They remained cut off from the rest of the world for a very long time and so they had even their own currecny. They never recognised the British Government. but now the Himachal Government has penetrated into the villages with permission of the inhabitants and trying to bring them to the main stream of the nation. Most of the people are easily recognised from their dresses especially from the women dresses. The Kullu men wear Kullu cap and the women have particular head coverings for married and unmarried ladies. Due to cold climate they use mostly woollen clothes but colourful. Similarly the upper Shimla inhabitants use Busheri cap under the name of former Busher State and the gents have overcoats in Sirmaur and adjoining areas. The ladies have head coverings over the general dress. The Gaddis have an interesting dress which looks like the dresses of the time of Alexander of whom they claim themselves to be the descendants. Their women folk are very beautiful and they look more charming when in colourful dresses with lot of ornaments on them. The tribal of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur are also recognised from their unique dresses. It is really very interesting to study their customs, social interaction of marriages and deaths as well as their cultural heritage. In some parts even women drink and smoke due to the cold climate and it has been accepted in their system. Similarly meat is one of the items of food during the winter as they have to stay in cold. Now the people are becoming well to do because some commerical crops like apple, other fruits, dry fruits and potatoes are being produced on commerical lines.
