The tribal district of Himachal Pradesh, Kinnaur consists of POOH, MOORANG, KALPA, NICHAR and SANGLA. According to the 1991 census, it has been recently thrown open to the visitors and now one can start from Shimla to Kinnaur, Spiti, Lahaul to Manali. Kinnaur is in the lap of the high Himalayan mountains rugged and terrain which has fascinating and beauty of its own. Last but not the least, for the anthropoogist, scholars, writers and artists the attractive tribal inhabitation of this tribal region where the Hindu, Buddhists cultures meet. Area of Kinnaur is about 640 Sq. km. THE ROUTE TO SPITI : Travelling eastward from Triloknath along the Chandra river, the road leads to the KUNZAM pass 5000 mts. ahead lies the valley of Spiti, a veritable Shangri-La. On either sides of the pass is a marvels view of the snow-clad mountains. Descending on the other side of the pass, in the enchanting valley, is Losar, a picturesque hamlet set midst of villages, the barren wilderness. On either side of the river are a number of villages. Into the cold valley, from the snowy range surrounding it, descend glaciers. The Great Himalayan range passes South of Spiti. The highest peak is Shilla7025 mts. Inter-dependent on each other for communications and trade both remain cut off from the rest of the world for greater part of the year. Rohtang pass remains open from May-October and it is only at this time that one can cross Kunzam pass to enter Spiti, the other route involves a perilous trek up the Sutlej river valleys from the Kinnaur side.
